Sofia is an undergraduate student from Colombia and is studying hospitality leadership at DePaul University. She shared with us some of her experiences as an international student at DePaul and why she enjoys living in Chicago.

Why did you choose to attend DePaul University?

What convinced me to attend DePaul University was the fact that it was located in the heart of Chicago. The University provides great resources to propel your professional aspirations as an international student and provides a great foundation for academic excellence.

What is your favorite part of attending the university?

My favorite part about attending the university is the fact that it is located in Chicago. With a city as big and diverse as Chicago, there are always new places to visit. This makes living in the city exciting given that on the weekends you have the independence to explore and discover new places that fit one's own personal interests.

Do you have a favorite class?

My favorite class so far has been Sophomore Seminar, a class where you study multiculturalism in the United States. The seminar I chose focused on the Rhetoric of U.S. Feminism which allowed me to explore different interests and learn more about the history of feminism in the United States. The professor was extremely understanding and approachable and allowed us to further explore topics that surrounded feminist theory.

How does DePaul support international students?

DePaul University has a great support system for international students that provides both academic and personal assistance. The University also offers opportunities to join clubs and organizations where one can meet other international students and create a network of like-minded individuals. Programs such as International Student Orientation provide excellent support for individuals entering the United States for the first time and provide resources for students to adjust to student life in a new country.

What would you tell a friend if they are thinking about enrolling at DePaul?

I would let them know that the tools DePaul University has to offer help you excel both personally, academically, and professionally. DePaul offers a non-traditional college experience that many seek, and it offers opportunities of immersing yourself in a professional industry located in Chicago.
