Studying Accounting and Making Industry Connections at DePaul
As the #52 best undergraduate accounting program in the U.S., DePaul’s School of Accountancy delivers excellent benefits for students through quality academics and engagement (U.S. News & World Report, 2021).
Dr. Hui Lin, an associate professor at the School of Accountancy, located in DePaul’s Dreihaus College of Business, has a lot to say about the benefits of studying at DePaul. During our interview with her, she describes the faculty and the program – but she also mentions that the location in Chicago gives students an advantage in the job market. Students go to class in the morning and then walk to their internships in the afternoon, continuing to develop their professional experience. Hear more from Dr. Lin in her video:
Dr. Lin also mentioned that employers come to campus to recruit students. We were interested in learning more about how employers recruit at DePaul and decided to learn more. According to the Career Center, more than 450 employers contact DePaul to recruit students for jobs every year. One of those employers is KPMG, one of The Big 4, and one of the leading accounting firms in the world.
How KPMG recruits at DePaul
How does KPMG, one of the world’s leading accounting firms, recruit DePaul students? The answer is a lot! We learned that KPMG has 18 events scheduled at DePaul this Winter Quarter. That’s more than one every week! KPMG dedicates a recruiter to DePaul and invests its time and energy at DePaul in many different ways to meet, educate, and interview our students.
KPMG speakers attend classes and meet with student accounting groups to discuss the different divisions within the corporation, what each does, and what kinds of employees KPMG needs. Students can attend presentations about KPMG’s corporate culture as well as the benefits this Big 4 firm offers, like their Global Opportunities program and Diversity and Inclusion at KPMG.
Another exciting opportunity for DePaul students to connect with KPMG professionals is through the Executive in Residence Program. KPMG professionals, all of whom are at the manager level or above, dedicate blocks of time to individual DePaul students. Students schedule a private 15-minute appointment to talk about almost anything! It is very beneficial for students to have this much face-to-face time with these KPMG leaders. Some of the topics that students discuss include:
- KPMG’s mission and corporate culture
- The executive’s job description and responsibilities
- Career opportunities at KPMG
- Advice on resumes and interviewing best practices
